EPS graduate student, Emily Nicholson, received two scholarships, the SEG Foundation Scholarship and the Norman and Shirley Domenico Scholarship, from the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG), totaling $3,000.00 for the 2022-2023 academic year. SEG Scholarships encourage the study of geophysics and related geosciences in universities around the world. Emily is pursuing a MS degree working with Greg Mountain on her thesis that focuses on the Eirik Drift, a sediment drift located off the Southern Greenland coast. This thesis focus is to improve understanding of: 1. changes in the strength and location of abyssal currents linked to global changes in climate (i.e. glacial-interglacial variations); 2. the cyclicity of sedimentary sequences as indicators of change in marine sediment accumulation; and, 3. the complexity and variability of current-controlled deposits in deep-sea environments. Emily will be a Teaching Assistant in the department in the 22-23 academic year teaching Sedimentary Geology lab and Bob Kopp’s new course "The Climate Crisis and How to Solve It".
