Faculty Advisor: Dr. Ben Black
Project Description: Volcanoes, film, and informal STEM education intersect at the NY Virtual Volcano Observatory (NYVVO), a summer outreach program on Governors Island in NY harbor. Each summer, one or two student staffers run day-to-day operations at NYVVO, interacting with visitors (including many kids) interested in learning more about volcanoes and the geologic history of the NY/NJ/CT area. Prospective applicants should be: 1) excited to learn and share the science of volcanoes, 2) reliable, comfortable interacting with the public, and good problem-solvers, 3) able to commit to working every Saturday and Sunday between May 1 and July 15. Student staffers will be paid on an hourly basis. There are also opportunities for exploring term-time research in Dr. Black's lab in EPS.
